British Values at Clarksfield

The Government emphasises that schools are required to ensure that key ‘British Values’ are taught in all UK schools.  The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy.

The five British Values are:
• Democracy
• The rule of law
• Individual liberty
• Mutual respect
• Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

We use strategies within the National curriculum and beyond to secure such outcomes for students.   The examples that follow show some of the many ways Clarksfield seeks to embed British values.

Democracy

The principle of democracy is consistently being reinforced at Clarksfield, with democratic processes being used for important decisions within the school community, for instance, elections being held for School and Sports Council positions.  The principle of democracy is also explored in the History and Religious Studies curriculum as well as in PSHE and assemblies.

The rule of law
The importance of laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced at Clarksfield.

Pupils are taught the rules and expectations of the school which are highlighted by the annual home school agreement that pupils, parents and teachers sign.  Pupils are taught the value and the reasons behind laws that govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.  Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service reinforce this message.


Pupils are always helped to distinguish right from wrong.  The Behaviour Policy sets out a zero tolerance approach to any form of aggression, abuse or violence.

Individual liberty
Pupils are actively encouraged to make independent choices, with the knowledge that they are in a safe, secure and supportive environment. Staff at Clarksfield educate and provide boundaries for students to make informed choices, through a safe environment and an empowering education.   Pastoral support reinforces the importance of making the right choices.


Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised on how to exercise these safely, for example through e-safety and circle time and PSHE work.


Vulnerable pupils are protected and there is a strong anti-bullying culture at the school.  We have anti-bullying themed weeks and all staff and pupils take an active part in this.  The school operates a robust policy of logging incidents. Pupils have key roles and responsibilities within school – e.g. School and Sports Council.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Those with Difference Faiths and Beliefs

Respect is one of the core values at our school.  Pupils know and understand that it is expected that respect is shown to everyone, adults and children.  Students learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others.  All members of the school community treat each other with respect and this is reiterated through its teaching and learning environments.


Mutual respect is embraced throughout the curriculum by providing the opportunity for pupils to express their views in a safe environment.  Through the PSHE and RE curriculum pupils are encouraged to discuss and respect differences between people such as different faith, ethnicity, disability, gender, sexuality and difference of family situations.

Visit from PCSOs

On Friday 28th April two visitors came to talk to the children during assemblies about keeping safe whilst out and about in the local area and abiding by the law. They particularly talked about road safety and the laws about cars and driving.

St George's Day Assemblies

 Each Key Stage had an assembly about St George's day on Monday 24th April, to learn about who celebrates St George's Day, who St George was and why he is celebrated.

 

English Classes for Parents and Carers

The school offers FREE English classes to parents and carers, please contact Hussain at school if you would like to join one of our classes.

We recommend all our new parents join the English class to help their children settle into school quicker and to make new friends!

The class is led by experienced staff.

Comic Relief 2017

Friday, 24th March was Comic Relief.  Thank you to all families who arranged for red coloured outfits for their children to wear.

I am pleased to announce with the sale of the cakes, red noses and donations for coming to school wearing a red outfit, the whole school has managed to raise… DRUM ROLL PLEASE£537.31!!!! 

What a fantastic achievement from everyone in school, well done you should all be very proud of yourselves!

Year 5 Careers Fair: Love Learning – Be Inspired

Some of our Year 5 girls went to the Mahdlo Centre in Oldham.  They participated in an exciting event that motivated and inspired them to think about the world of work and future careers.  There were over 40 local businesses and employers attending from a wide range of sectors, and the event raised awareness and aspirations of young people in Oldham in an interactive and fun way.

Year 6 London Residential

As one of the children’s learning experience, Year 6 pupils experienced first-hand some of our capital city’s most historic and iconic landmarks.

During the trip, the children participated in a number of activities to support their learning throughout the curriculum, as well as providing a memorable and exciting shared experience with their friends. 

Activities included:

- Walking tour to see famous landmarks (Downing Street, Buckingham Palace, Houses of Parliament, Hyde Park)

- London Eye

- A river Cruise on the Thames

- A live musical at a London Theatre

- A visit to Parliament to meet with our local MP, Debbie Abrahams

- Museum Visit

- Warner Brothers Studio – Behind the scenes Harry Potter tour

World Book Day 2017

It's that time of year again, where we celebrate authors, illustrators, books and reading...

It's World Book Day of course!

At Clarksfield, we celebrated World Book Day by dressing up as characters from some of our favourite books.

Activities included: 

  • re-design your favourite book cover,
  • World Book Day quiz, 
  • Key Stage assemblies and whole school competitions (various)

Yet again, many of the children and staff excelled in their efforts for World Book Day this year.

 

As always, the children and staff were very creative in their ideas for dressing up as a favourite book character.

 

Clarksfield School's Linking Project

Objectives:

  • Promote attitudinal change at a personal level.
  • Increase awareness and knowledge of different cultural and social perspectives.
  • Increase awareness and knowledge of commonality of interests and life-experience.
  • Challenge young people to reflect on preconceptions and stereotypical views.
  • Empower young people to take responsibility for their contribution to community cohesion.

We have found the Linking Project (with Diggle Primary School) valuable throughout school as a chance to promote positive values and inter cultural understanding. We feel that this also goes beyond the school into secondary school and even further ahead, as this generation are the future of Oldham, and need to be able to value each other and work together whilst respecting each other’s cultural differences, and the linking project certainly supports this.

As a school serving a vast majority of children from a Pakistani heritage, the Schools Linking Project provides pupils from Clarksfield with invaluable opportunities to meet, work alongside and find out about other children from Oldham who have different social and cultural backgrounds to their own. School linking is an essential part of the School Development Plan underpinning the school’s inclusive ethos and enriching curriculum opportunities.

The Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural needs of  the school are well served by the School Linking Project and this was recognised in our most recent GOOD OFSTED inspection.

 

Parliament's Education Service

 

Clarksfield School had a visit from the Parliament's Education Service on 3rd November.  The aim of the visit was to inform, engage and empower young people to understand and get involved in, Parliament, politics and democracy.  

 

They delivered a series of workshops - to the children in UKS2 - covering themes ranging from how Parliament works to debating, voting and elections.  Each workshop enabled children to examine aspects of Parliamentary process and practice and how they could engage more actively in their democracy.  

 

Poppy Sales

Thank you to children and families who have supported the poppy appeal by donating money for a poppy to wear in remembrance of those who have given so much for the freedom we enjoy and take for granted.  Clarksfield thoughts also go out to all families affected by conflicts, present and past.

Minute Silence on Wednesday

On Wednesday, the children and staff of Clarksfield School undertook the national minute’s silence to commemorate the bravery of those who lost their lives or fought and survived to preserve the rights and freedoms afforded to us today in Britain.  The children were very thoughtful and sensible without exception, once again, showing their wonderful values.

Friday, 13th November was Children in Need Day at Clarksfield.  Thank you to all families who arranged for spots or superhero outfits for their children.
 
Children in Need – Money Raised
I am pleased to announce with the sale of the cakes, wristbands and donations for coming to school in spots or superhero outfits the whole school has managed to raise DRUM ROLL PLEASE £454.30!!!!  What a fantastic achievement from everyone in school, well done you should all be very proud of yourselves!

Avonleigh Gardens Residential Care Home

Avonleigh Gardens, which is a residential care home, offers care to 58 residents with a wide range of needs, including learning and physical disabilities and dementia care.  The School Council representatives spent a morning with the lovely residents helping to decorate their Christmas tree as well as singing along with a few of their favourite Christmas carols.

 

Debbie Abrahams (MP) Visits Clarksfield School

Clarksfield’s School Council representatives had a special meeting with Debbie Abrahams (MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth).  The children asked her question about her job, her hobbies and how she could help to improve our school and also make Clarksfield Community a better place.  

 

Year 3's Church Visit

Children had the opportunity to learn about what a church feels like and looks like and why Christians come to the church, what they do there and how they care for it.

EYFS & KS1 Nativities

Tuesday,15th December, EYFS and Key Stage 1 children put on a fantastic performance of ‘Whoops – A – Daisy and Little Angel Gets Her Wings.” They have worked so hard to learn songs, scripts and actions over the last few weeks and excelled themselves with a truly outstanding show! Parents, children and staff really enjoyed it and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house! Well done!

Christmas Carol Concert 

On Tuesday, 15th December, the children from KS2 came together for a Christmas celebration to sing carols and celebrate the values and traditions associated with Christmas.  We talked and sang about the messages of inclusion, of celebration, of love and respect for all; values that unite all people of all faiths.  The children had a lovely time, working and singing together!

KS2 Christmas Panto - Old Mother Goose

Old Mother Goose has run out of money until a gift of a magical golden goose lays all her problems to rest … or so she thinks.

Old Mother Goose is suddenly richer than she could ever have imagined and money leads to happiness right? Tempted by the wicked Demon King to trade the magical goose for untold wealth, beauty and youth, she realises that perhaps happiness can’t be bought.

The children and staff (in KS2) enjoyed a Christmas show including, songs, slapstick and shouts of “it’s behind you!” This classic tale is one for all the ages!

"Once again the performers egg-ceeded themselves and produced a most egg-cellent pantomime!"

TEXT SANTA APPEAL 2015

On Friday, 18th December, it was 'Christmas Jumper Day'. As well as a bit of fun, children and staff brought in a £1 donation for the Text Santa appeal, which is being split between three very worthwhile charities:

• Wish Upon a Star
• MacMillan

An enormous THANK YOU to everyone who wore their favourite festive knit and donated so generously towards this extremely worthwhile initiative. Your donations will help give hope to many families experiencing difficulties during the Christmas period.   

Chinese New Year

Children in Early Years Foundation Stage have been celebrating the Chinese New Year by sampling some of the culture and food.

Mrs Seed - Foundation Stage Leader - said: “The children loved trying the new foods whilst listening to a variety of Chinese music. This really helped towards their understanding of other cultures within our community.

NORTHWEST SHOE BOX AND AID APPEAL

Once again, the generosity of our families has been brought to light!  A huge thanks to families who have donated shoe boxes filled with basic everyday items in support of the Shoe Box Appeal.  These items will provide much needed relief for many Syrian refugees who have been affected by the crisis in Syria.  Also, your generous cash donations has meant that the School Council has been able to raise £203.74!

We appreciate your continued support and hope that by working together, we can bring some joy into the lives of those innocent families whose lives have been devastated by war.

The children thoroughly enjoyed listening to a range of stories from a number of different teachers and enjoyed sharing their favourite books with their classmates.

As always, the children and staff were very creative in their ideas for dressing up as a favourite book character.

Religious Education - Year 5 Church Visit

'As part of their Religious Education curriculum this term, Year 5 are learning about the Christian festival of Easter.

The children were given the fantastic opportunity to visit St Barnabas Church on Arundel Street, Clarksfield, where they met with Reverend Paul Monk on Thursday 3rd March 2016.

The children had the chance to explore the features of the church and understand its importance.  Many of the children also asked questions about the religious festival of Easter to further deepen their understanding about Christianity.'

Sports Relief 2016

To raise money for Sports Relief, the children and staff came into school wearing either an item of sports clothing or something red.  All the children and staff made generous donations in order to do this.  Throughout the day, various activities were organised:

*children and staff from Foundation Stage and KS1 walked around the school perimeter

*children and staff from KS2 walked around the Clarksfield area

*at lunch time, Mr Hussain organised a penalty shoot-out competition

*after school, Friends’ of Clarksfield organised a ‘cake sale

The whole school has managed to raise, DRUM ROLL PLEASE... £331.56!!!!  What a fantastic achievement from everyone in school. Well done - you should all be very proud of yourselves!

Year 5's Visit to Stockport Air Raid Shelter

As part of their Literacy topic in the Spring Term, Year studied the book ‘Carrie’s War’, a story about the interesting journey of an evacuee brother and sister. They went to the Stockport Air Raid Shelter for the whole day to have the chance to experience what life was like for an evacuee during World War II.

Sporting Participation: SEND Inclusion Event

Castleshaw Linking Project

As part of our school link project with Werneth School, Year 5 visited The Castleshaw Centre near Delph for the whole day. The children were given a practical experience of the outdoors where they participated in the competitive sport of orienteering and worked on developing their team work skills.

Shoe Box Appeal - Update

As you may already be aware, in March, the School Council, with the support of the school community, was able to raise an incredible £203.73. The amount raise was then matched - pound for pound - by Mrs O'Donnell.  So last week, the School Council members, along with Mrs Dust and Mrs Ali went to Alexander Retail Park to buy additional items required to complete the outstanding packs ready to be sent on the next convey to Syria.

A Special Prayer Service for One of Clarksfield's Special Children:  Aleeza Ahmed

Dear Parents and Friends,

As you will probably know - one of our children - Aleeza Ahmed, who attended our school in Year 1, very sadly passed away last year. Last Friday, the school community gathered to celebrate her short but very happy life with a special prayer service at school. This was arranged with Aleeza’s family.  The Imam from Ronald Street Mosque led a short but beautiful prayer.   After the prayer, a plaque engraved with Aleeza’s name was placed on one of our school playground benches in memory of Aleeza Ahmed: our little girl from Clarksfield.

Aleeza’s family have also made a donation of some special books (for our school library) for all the children of Clarksfield to read and these books will be inscribed in her name for remembrance.

In addition to this, the staff and pupils organised a coffee morning and a bake sale which took place in the gym after school. As a result of all of your generosity, the school was able to raise an outstanding £516.00. 

All the money raised will be given to The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and The North West Air Ambulance Service in memory of Aleeza Ahmed.

Furthermore, Aleeza’s parents were very deeply moved that the entire school community should care so much about their daughter and remember her in such a special way; they have asked Mrs O’Donnell to thank you all for your support - they really could not be more grateful and appreciative!

Finally, Mrs O’Donnell, along with the Governors of Clarksfield and the school community would like to express their heartfelt appreciation for everything that everyone has done to contribute to the memorial for Aleeza.

As part of the school's linking project with Diggle Primary School, children in LKS2 have been working closely with their counterparts from Diggle Primary School to promote community cohesion.

The children in Year 4 went to visit Diggle Primary School.  They had a tour of the school, made friendship bracelets and gave them to their pen pals.  They also had a multi-faith talk from an Imam and a Priest.

On separate occasion, the children in Year 4 went to visit the Oldham Coliseum along with their friends from Diggle Primary School. The children participated in different drama activities and acted out Mother Goose with their friends from Diggle Primary School.

Queen Elizabeth’s 90th Birthday Celebrations

To mark this special occasion, Clarksfield Primary School organised a day of celebrations and special activities in school. This included: making birthday cards for the Queen (the best of which will be sent to the palace), making crowns, playing traditional 1920s games, researching the Queen’s life and giving presentations, and much more!

As part of the celebrations,the children came to school dressed in either red, white and blue or in clothes representative of the 1920s (the decade in which Queen Elizabeth was born).  Also, the Dolce catering team organised a special buffet lunch to celebrate this special occasion. 

It was great to see the children dressed up and excited to celebrate this important day in Britain’s history.  Some very creative children (in 6JA) created a short video clip, using the iMovie app on the iPad, celebrating the Queen's life.  This is further evidence of the school's commitment to actively seeking to promote “British Values”.

Helipad Appeal - GREEN DAY

The Royal Manchester Children's Hospital provides specialist healthcare services for children and young people throughout the North West, as well as nationally and internationally. 

Last Thursday, Clarksfield Primary School’s School Council members organised a special assembly which was delivered by Lisa Humphreys (Events Coordinator at the Children’s Hospital) and Humphrey (the hospital's mascot).  She explained to the children about the Charity Appeal to build a dedicated helipad on site at the Trust at a cost of £3.9 million. 

Using the strapline, 'Time Saves Lives', the Helipad Appeal will enable the creation of a brand-new 24-hour access primary helicopter landing site, the first of its kind in central Manchester. This will allow the hospital to save many more lives and will increase the chances of a full or improved level of recovery in many seriously ill or injured patients.

The helipad will be built on top of the MRI hospital car park and connect to Manchester Royal Infirmary, Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, St Mary's Hospital and Manchester Royal Eye Hospital via a link bridge and roof top corridor.

Therefore, with it being the holy month of Ramadan - a time for reflection, doing good deeds and donating money to charity,  the School Council members have decided to support this unique project by organising a whole-school non-uniform day, where the children will come into school in GREEN, whilst also making a generous donation towards the Helipad Appeal
