“Learning to learn together by building our learning power”
At Clarksfield Primary School, we believe in teaching our children to learn, rather than just filling empty vessels with knowledge. We see the importance of the children acquiring knowledge, experience and concepts to create their own thinking and becoming independent learners.
Our curriculum is therefore very bespoke to our children and school to accommodate this. We have a very language rich ethos which is embedded into our curriculum. The deep and rich curriculum is planned around the children’s interests and needs, whilst also being very skills-led to ensure children are building on subject specific skills each year. The themed units and cross-curricular approach helps children to see how subjects are both independent and interdependent, and enables them to see a bigger picture of their learning, making connections across different subjects so that they can talk about a topic from multiple perspectives. The Curriculum uses a question as the starting point from which all of our Geography, History, Science, Art, Design and Technology PSHE and Computing learning derives. Instead of discrete lessons we blend the subjects together to create a holistic approach to answering the topic question. The main question is broken down into smaller, additional challenge questions that build towards a bigger picture. MFL, PE, Computing, PSHE and Music are taught discretely through alternative schemes of work respectively although these subjects are also applied through some of the topics.
Our curriculum reflects the wider world as well as our children’s place within it. We seek to link all learning as far as possible to create meaningful experiences and context rich lessons both in and out of the classroom. Using thematic contexts for problem solving in Maths or high quality text based learning in English guarantee basic skills are enhanced and fully embedded.
In each year group, the children will learn about specific artists, poets and musicians, many of them local to us. We use these people as role models to the children to look at what they have achieved and how they became successful.
Our personalised curriculum is designed to equip children with vital knowledg and skills to ensure that they become whole-rounded and responsible citizens.
